American Water Spaniels are muscular, medium-sized dogs with a marcel to curly coat. It is important that they are the right size and well proportioned. They are solidly built, full of strength and quality, with the substance and bone needed to support their musculature, without any sign of clumsiness. Hair is also a key point, as with all waterdogs. The number of waves or curls can vary depending on the region, while the undercoat must be sufficient to protect against weather, water or punishing cover.
