These balanced, calm and even-tempered spaniels make great companions and are easy to train. They are solid, muscular and fairly close to the ground, yet very elegantly built. Smaller dogs must have a lot of substance.
Long, noble, of special importance to the breed.
Straight, solid back that is not too long, especially muscular loins, broad, slightly sloping croup, broad, well descended ribcage.
Solid brown, brown with white or speckled markings, dark roan, light roan, mottled, brown and white with or without a few small spots.
Set not too low, turned slightly forward.
Carried level, with last third turned up slightly.
Close, 1½ inches on back and sides of the body, possibly longer on underside of neck, chest and belly.
German Longhaired Pointers combine the bloodlines of bird, hawking and water dogs as well as bracken dogs, which explains their exceptionally versatile skills. Selective breeding has been conducted since 1879, when the main breed characteristics were established. The first standard was published in 1897.
