Beagles are cheerful dogs bred principally for tracking hares by scent. Bold, very active, with energy, stamina and determination, Beagles are even-tempered, intelligent and amiable animals that are easy to live with.
Good length, powerful without being coarse, finer in females, no frown or wrinkling.
Straight, level topline, powerful, supple loins that are short but well balanced on the whole, chest let down below the elbows.

Demand for Beagles only really started to pick up in the United Kingdom in the 1960s. The number of Kennel Club registrations exploded in a 15-year period from 154 in 1954 to around 4000 in 1969, when it became the most popular breed in the country.
