The loyalty and protective instincts of Australian Cattle Dogs make them self-appointed guardians of herd, herdsman and herdsman’s property. While they are distrustful of strangers, they must be obedient, especially in the show rings. Any trait of temperament or build foreign to this breed’s nature must be regarded as a serious fault.

Head+

Strong, and in harmony with the other proportions and the dog’s general conformation.

lupoid

Body+

The length of the body from the point of the sternum to the buttocks is greater than the height to the withers (ratio 10/9). The topline is level.

Coat+

Blue: blue, blue mottled or blue speckled with or without other markings, which may be black, blue or tan on the head, preferably evenly spread. Red speckle: good even spread of red speckling all over, including the undercoat, which should be neither white nor cream, with or without darker red markings on the head.

lupoid

Ears+

Moderately sized, smaller rather than bigger, broad at the base, muscular, pricked and moderately pointed, neither spoon nor bat-eared.

lupoid

Tail+

Set moderately low, following the contours of the sloping croup. It extends approximately to the hock.

lupoid

Hair+

Smooth, double coat with short, dense undercoat. The topcoat must be close, with each individual hair being straight, hard and flat lying, to ensure it is watertight.

lupoid

Built to workThe breed’s general appearance is that of a strong, compact, symmetrically built working dog with a can-do and will-do attitude that ensures it always gets the job done, however odious. Its substance, power, symmetry and muscle strength combine to produce an impression of great agility, force and endurance. Any tendency to grossness or weediness is a serious fault.TrustworthyAs the name implies, Australian Cattle Dogs are incomparable when it comes to looking after herding cattle, in wide open tracts or confined spaces. They are always alert, extremely intelligent, vigilant, brave and trustworthy animals with an implicit devotion to their calling, which make them the ideal working dog.

Did you know ?

When trotting the feet tend to come close together at ground level, as the dog accelerates. But when it stops, all four legs should be full square.
